I have always felt that not enough of art from Southeast Asia is seen and disseminated through the film medium in the greater regional and international circuits and have, in the past years, pressed for opportunities with editors in the international and regional media, but to no avail. There has simply been no appetite in the international media.

With SUNSHOWER, Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia, 1980’s to Now, I thought I would have a go at actualising this vision of sharing art from Southeast Asia through film. You can say this is my first “video piece”.

Even at this length, I know I have not done the art and artists represented in the show justice. With 3 hours given by organisers for 180 works by 86 artists/groups in 2 separate venues, even with “guerrilla-style” shooting, I could only cover very few. It is not just about the art, it is about the society – its past, its present and its future. Thanks to Mella Jaarsma, Aditya Novali, Harsono FX, Yee I-Lann, Albert Yonathan, Jay Atienza for agreeing to be interviewed.

I hope that given a chance, you will go see the works for yourself. This is said to be one of the largest art exhibitions on contemporary art from Southeast Asia in history – closes October 23, 2017.

Enjoy.

Spent 1.5 days in Hong Kong and put this together. Sharing impressions.  So much to see, so little time. #ArtBaselHK #ArtCentral
